Tiskilwa Historical Society

The Tiskilwa Public Library will co-sponsor this event with the Tiskilwa Historical Society as Illinois author Tom Emery presents “The History of Illinois” in a one-hour program. Tom will share insights to the events and stories that have defined our state, including the pre-statehood era, railroads, agriculture, inventions, Lincoln and the Civil War, gender and racial advancements, the Haymarket Affair, the Chicago Fire and World’s Fair, and the wars of the 20th century. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. at Tiskilwa’s Museum on Main and will be followed by refreshments and social time in the museum galleries. Bob Morrissey, associate history professor at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, will present his take on the story of Native Americans in Illinois: “At the Center of Everything: The Power of Indigenous Illinois in Early America.”  Beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Tiskilwa’s Museum on Main, Bob’s program will explore a new and different story of the Illinois Indians during the colonial period, with special emphasis on their innovation and pragmatism. Shadows of the Blue & Gray

The Shadows of the Blue and Gray Civil War event held at City County Park Princeton Illinois Saturday October 13 and Sunday October 14 2018.  Gates open at 9:00am each day with a reenactment battle each day at 2:30pm.  Military and civilian camps open for public viewing.  Medical demonstration after battle.

Catchable Trout Program

Catchable Trout Program: The Hennepin Canal is one of that state parks that participates in the state's "Catchable Trout" program.  Several hundred pounds of trout are released into the lagoon outside the visitor's center, which remains netted off for about a month.  This program is run twice a year: the 1st Saturday in April and the 3rd Saturday in October.  Office: (815) 454-2328

Salute to Veterans

Tiskilwa Historical Society will host its annual SALUTE TO VETERANS at the Museum on Main.  The story of a most unusual veteran will begin at 7:00 p.m. as living history actor Marlene Rivero presents “Ann Stokes:  African American Civil War Nurse.”  Stokes is believed to be the first African American woman to serve on board a U.S. military vessel.  She served for more than a year on the USS Red Rover and successfully applied for a pension for her service in the U.S. Navy, becoming the first woman ever to do so.
